DGB INDEX Good work – annual report 2021

The DGB Good Work Index measures the quality of working conditions from the perspective of employees. The representative survey of employees in Germany was carried out for the 15th time in 2021. After further development of the survey instrument in 2011/12, the identical questionnaire has been used for ten years. During this period, employees' assessments of their work situation improved slightly. The index value

, which expresses work quality in aggregate form, increased from 61 points in 2012 to 65 points in 2021. There were no changes compared to the previous year: in 2020 the overall index value was also 65 points.

Respondents rated the meaning of their work positively (82 points). This is based primarily on a high level of identification with one's own work and the impression that one is making an important contribution to the company. The assessment that one's own work also makes an important contribution to society is somewhat less pronounced, but is also shared by the majority.

It is somewhat surprising that despite the Corona pandemic, the positive trend in the assessment of employment security continued (79 points). The vast majority of respondents rarely worry about losing their job or their professional future. The fact that this assessment is largely positive even after a year of the pandemic is certainly due to the stabilization of the labor market through government and collective bargaining measures such as the expansion of short-time work benefits.
